Alexander Leighton Award in Psychiatric Epidemiology

This award was created in honour of Professor Alex Leighton, a pioneer and leader of Canadian psychiatric epidemiology. Its purpose is to recognize a person or group that has contributed significantly to the advancement of Canadian psychiatric epidemiology through innovative studies, methods development, teaching or knowledge transfer. It can relate to lifelong activities or to a recent significant achievement. 


 

Dr. Brett Thombs

(2024) Dr. Thombs is known internationally for innovation in applying novel methodologies and leading effective large-scale collaborations to address important unsolved problems in applied mental health research. He has produced transformative work in psychiatric epidemiology and is one of the leading researchers in the world in several areas, including in mental health screening and high-caliber patient-engaged mental health and quality-of-life research in rare diseases. He completed his PhD in clinical psychology in 2004, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and joined the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University in 2006 where he is now a Full Professor. Her has published close to 400 peer-reviewed articles and been awarded > $22 million as PI, including 38 CIHR operating or team grants as PI. His work has been cited > 26,500 times.
